Essential Care for Your Bodyboard

Make your board last longer and perform better in the water!

Taking good care of your bodyboard is fundamental to ensuring its durability, performance, and that "fresh-out-of-the-shop" look for much longer. Many beginners lose board performance due to a lack of simple maintenance. Today, on the BS Bodyboarding School blog, we’re sharing the essential tips you need to know.

☀️ Avoid Leaving Your Board in the Sun

After your surf session, never leave your bodyboard exposed to direct sunlight. Intense heat can warp the internal core, causing the board to "banana", meaning it becomes permanently curved. This directly affects your speed on the waves, your control, and your overall progression as a rider.

💡 Pro Tip: If you have no choice but to leave it in the sun for a moment, cover the front (deck) with a towel or a board bag, and keep the bottom (slick) facing up. This helps minimize heat damage.

💧 Rinse with Fresh Water

When you get home, always rinse your board with fresh water to remove salt and sand. Over time, salt can dry out and degrade the board’s materials. Avoid leaving your bodyboard wet for long periods; dry it thoroughly before storing.

🏠 Store It Properly

Always store your board inside a bodyboard bag in a cool, shaded place. This protects your gear from accidental impacts and the heat of indirect sunlight.

Don’t Forget Your Other Gear

For the best longevity, you should rinse all your equipment after every use:

  • Bodyboard

  • Leash

  • Swim fins (Flippers)

  • Rash guards / UV shirts

  • Wetsuits (Neoprene)
